Supernatural Creator Eric Kripke: "Dean Lives!"

Not only did Supernatural creator Eric Kripke confirm that Dean Winchester is alive — though not too comfortably since he's in hell — he spilled next season's plans for the beleaguered Winchester brothers.

TVGuide.com: You weren't lying when you said you were hoping to make your fans really angry and full of anxiety all summer!
Eric Kripke: [Laughs] It was a fun way to end the season. Dean meat-hooked in the center of what looks like a thousand mile spiderweb of rusty chains. Sort of M.C.Escher meets Hellraiser.

TVGuide.com: Why did you send Dean to hell?
Kripke: Everyone expected Dean to be safe! That's reason enough to send him to hell. But also, in ways I can't reveal, it's a turning point for Dean. You need huge moves to happen that can cause radical shifts in the characters, that set them off in a new direction. So what happens to Dean in hell and how Dean gets out become primary concerns of Season 4.

TVGuide.com: So you'll have scene set in hell?
Kripke: I can give this away. Dean spends a lot more time in hell than anyone's probably thinking. Dean could spend — in human time — six months, maybe more. In hell time, who knows how many years or decades that might be. [Laughs] I won't tell you how he gets out, but he will emerge to a different landscape. A lot has changed since he's been away, and he has to readjust to his loved ones after being gone for so long.

TVGuide.com: Is he still human or… part demon?
Kripke: It takes hundreds of years to be burned away into a demon. Dean won't be a demon, but there will be an ongoing mystery. When he gets out of hell, he'll have little recollection of what happened to him down there. That's one of the mysteries of the season.

TVGuide.com: Speaking of demons, will Ruby be back? And any new characters?
Kripke: Ruby will be back, and we're introducing a new supernatural species. We intend to bring back Steve Williams, the old embittered hermit hunter Rufus.

TVGuide.com: Let's get to the heart and soul of the show. How will Dean's hellish sojourn affect the relationship between the brothers?
Kripke: It will affect it massively. We'll slowly unfold Dean remembering what happened in hell, and that will drastically affect their relationship. Dean is basically a POW coming home from the worst hellhole — literally — ever. How do you reconnect with your life when you've been through something that horrific? That becomes one of his issues. But don't worry, he's still the same smart ass he always was.

TVGuide.com: What's grieving little brother Sam been up to? In the finale, we saw some of his power in his fight with über demon Lilith.
Kripke: We presented him as immune to her powers. We have some twists and turns in store with that. Sam promised Dean right before Dean died that he wasn't going to pursue any of his powers in terms of discovering his potential. Upon Dean's return, Sam tells him "I promised I wouldn't head down that road because you made me promise," but we begin to wonder if indeed that is the truth. For whatever it's worth, the writers have never been this excited about a season. We have some really exciting plot twists.

TVGuide.com: Maybe they'll be exciting enough that this won't be your last season?
Kripke: Maybe. But you write every season like it's your last and hope for the best.

Kripke: Ci vogliono centinaia di anni per ridursi a un demone. Dean non sarà un demone, ma ci sarà un mistero in corso. Quando uscirà dall'inferno si ricorderà ben poco di quanto gli è accaduto laggiù. Quello è uno dei misteri della stagione.

TVGuide.com: Parlando di demoni Ruby ritorna? E ci saranno nuovi personaggi?
Kripke: Ruby torna e introduciamo una nuova specie soprannaturale. Intendiamo anche riportare Steve Williams, il vecchio e amareggiato cacciatore eremita Rufus.

TVGuide.com: Arriviamo al cuore e anima dello show. Il soggiorno di Dean all'inferno come influenzerà il rapporto tra i due fratelli?
Kripke: Lo influenzerà in maniera massiccia. Lentamente riveleremo i ricordi di Dean su quanto accaduto all'inferno e quello influenzerà il loro rapporto drasticamente. Dean è praticamente un prigioniero di guerra che torna dal peggior inferno - letteralmente - che si sia mai visto. Come ti riallacci alla tua vita quando hai attraversato qualcosa di così orribile? Quello diventa uno dei suoi problemi. Ma non vi preccupate, è sempre lo stesso smart ass (nota di fenix: gente questo letteralmente sarebbe ca*aca**o, ovviamente inteso in senso buono ) che è sempre stato.

TVGuide.com: Cosa ha fatto nel frattempo l'addolorato fratellino Sam? Nel finale abbiamo visto un po' del suo potere nella lotta col super-demone Lilith.
Kripke: L'abbiamo presentato come immune ai poteri di lei. Abbiamo un po' di colpi di scena e svolte al riguardo in cantiere. Sam ha promesso a Dean proprio prima che Dean morisse che non avrebbe usato i suoi poteri per scoprirne il potenziale. Dopo il ritorno di Dean, Sam gli dice "Ho promesso che non avrei percorso quella strada perché tu me l'hai fatto promettere", ma noi cominciamo a chiederci se sia davvero quella la verità. Per quello che vale, gli scrittori non sono mai stati così eccitati su una stagione. Abbiamo alcuni colpi di scena davvero eccitanti.

TVGuide.com: Forse saranno abbastanza eccitanti così che questa non sarà la vostra ultima stagione?
Kripke: Forse. Ma si scrive ogni stagione come se fosse l'ultima e si spera per il meglio.

Quello che mi lascia perplessa è che solitamente Kripke è riservatissimo sugli spoiler e dice poco o niente, ora invece si sta scatenando per incuriosirci e tranquillizzarci da un lato, facendoci venire l'ansia dall'altro. Ma per dirla con Lubrano, mi sorge spontanea la domanda: se si sente libero di dirci tuttte queste cose, quante e di quale portata ce ne sta nascondendo? "Conoscendolo" è evidente almeno ai miei occhi che ha davvero dei seri assi nella manica. Che dire sono affascinata e non vedo l'ora, perché ho questa sensazione che mi piacerà quello che ha architettato che non mi molla (e meno male) ma allo stesso tempo vorrei che si tappasse la bocca almeno fino ad agosto perché di questo passo non ci arrivo alla premiere senza sclerare (sono pazza io?)
Poi lui ha le "dichiarazioni standard" e già ne sto riconoscendo qualcuna, quindi spero che non si allarghi troppo... ha già detto abbastanza!

Comportamenti tipici di Kripke che spoilera: dice poco, e tende ad usare sempre le stesse frasi nelle varie interviste. (ecco perché parlavo di dichiarazioni standard) Per esempio la scorsa estate, dovendo difendere l'introduzione delle due ragazze, continuava a ripetere che erano "bad ass" e che avrebbero creato un sacco di problemi... sempre le stesse frasi a chiunque lo intervistasse (D'altra parte gli fanno tutti più o meno le stesse domande, quindi è anche inevitabile che si ripeta.)

Il mantra di quest'anno sarà "Dean lives"
Ho anche notato alcune frasi che mi sembra stia iniziando a ripetere, tipo:
- Everyone expected Dean to be safe! That's reason enough to send him to hell.
- Dean spends a lot more time in hell than anyone's probably thinking.
- he will emerge to a different landscape. A lot has changed since he's been away, and he has to readjust to his loved ones after being gone for so long.
- Ruby will be back, and we're introducing a new supernatural species.

Frasi che penso risentiremo spesso:
- Dean won't be a demon, but there will be an ongoing mystery.
- it's a turning point for Dean.
- the writers have never been this excited about a season. We have some really exciting plot twists.

Supernatural creator, and all around cool guy, Eric Kripke, spoke to TV Guide, and appears in this week’s issue of the magazine. He talks a lot about setting up Supernatural fandom’s Summer of Angst, and a little on what his plans are for Dean’s new direction.

He confirms a lot of rumors and fills in a lot of spoilage for the curious:

- Dean will stay in Hell for six months, in human time. In Hell time, it could amount to years.
- Dean needed to go to Hell. He needed a “turning point”.
- What happens in Hell, and how Dean gets out, are primary arcs in Season 4.
- Once Dean is out, he’ll have to adjust to the world that was forced to move on without him.
- Is Dean a demon? No. As many suspected because of Ruby’s revelations, having your humanity burn away requires centuries in Hell.
- Dean won’t remember much about his ordeal in Hell.
- Ruby will return. [I admit it. I like Ruby. I want to see her help them kick butt again.]
- A new species will appear. YUM!
- We’ll see more of Rufus Turner, Bobby’s friend in Vermont, from Time is on My Side, who gave Dean the information on Bela.

I suspect, from Kripke’s revelations that we’ll see quite a bit of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, when Dean returns. He’ll have lots of issues rebuilding his life, after being in Hell for a considerable length of (Hell) time.
Sam may have promised Dean that he wouldn’t try to discover his special powers, but I believe we’ll see some of it come out. Kripke only hints vaguely, but how else are they going to take down Lilith?
